JAL Miles Unlock Award Space You Won’t See Elsewhere

Here’s why this actually matters. Japan Airlines tends to release more premium cabin award space to its Mileage Bank members than it does to partner programs.

When you search directly through JAL, you’ll often spot availability that simply doesn’t show up elsewhere except via its own program.

  • 55,000-mile cost of a JAL business class award ticket between the U.S. and Japan

  • 110,000 miles to book that Japan Airlines first class award on the new A350-1000

  • Fly to Japan from North America for 27,000 miles in economy, 40,000 miles in premium economy and 55,000 miles in business class each way with reasonable fees, taxes and carrier-imposed surcharges.

  • Fly Japan Airlines' fabulous new A350 first-class suite from the U.S. to Japan for 110,000 miles in low season, 125,000 miles in regular season and 140,000 miles in high season each way.

Japan Airlines' Mileage Bank program offers flights from various North American mainland gateways to Japan starting from just:

  • 27,000 miles in economy class

  • 40,000 miles in premium economy

  • 55,000 miles in business class

  • 110,000 miles in first class

JAL miles are more versatile than most people realize. Japan Airlines is part of the Oneworld alliance. That means I can redeem Mileage Bank miles not just for JAL flights to Tokyo, but also on carriers like American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, and others.

Business Class

As a business class passenger with Japan Airlines, you have access to the Sakura Lounge at either Tokyo’s Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) airports before flying to the U.S. The Sakura Lounge offers a nice selection of food and drinks, as well as a place to relax before your flight.

Japan Airlines also has a very nice business class seat that it calls the Sky Suite. While the configuration of the business class cabin varies depending on the aircraft, all seats have direct aisle access and are lie-flat.

  • Boeing 777-300ER (JAL Sky Suite): 2-3-2 layout

  • Boeing 767-300ER (JAL Sky Suite II): 1-2-1 layout

  • Boeing 787-8 (JAL Sky Suite): 2-2-2 layout

  • Boeing 787-9 (JAL Sky Suite III): 1-2-1 layout

  • Airbus A350-1000: 1-2-1 layout

Aisle seats offer decent privacy, while the middle seat in the middle section of the Boeing 777-300ER has tons of privacy thanks to partitions on each side. However, the middle seat can feel tight with both partitions raised.

Note

  • Japan Airlines (JAL) miles generally expire at the end of the 36th month (3 years) after they are earned or transferred into your Mileage Bank account, with no option for extension. . Transferred points from Capital One adopt this strict 36-month expiration policy.

  • JMB members may not combine their miles with their family's or friend's miles in order to request awards. Additionally, JMB mileage may not be combined with miles earned through other airlines' mileage programs (including mileage programs of JMB partner airlines) when redeeming for awards.

Tip

  • Japan Airlines occasionally have transfer bonus from Capital One with 30% bonus (1000:975). Normal transfer at 3:2 (1000:750).
  • You can book reward seats up to 365 days in advance, 30 days before they release to partner airlines.
