Fo Guang Shan Western Temple launched several thematic learning programs in its spring English curriculum, attracting approximately 60 students and parents from its Three Good Deeds Children's Class, Children's Martial Arts Class, and Adult English Buddhist Studies Class. The Three Good Deeds Children's Class specially invited computer engineer Eugene Chiang, a LEGO enthusiast, to teach, inspiring children's self-awareness and a spirit of holistic coexistence through LEGO art projects.
Starting March 11th, the children in the Three Good Deeds Children's Class began three weeks of LEGO-themed learning. On the first day of the course, the children filled out worksheets to understand their external and internal characteristics and created unique LEGO figures representing themselves. Andrew, who loves green, assembled a green outfit and a LEGO figure holding a piece of art, while Asya, who loves peace and animals, dressed her LEGO figure in clothes printed with the word "love" and had animals surrounding it.
Chiang also guided the children through LEGO-built vegetable gardens and flower beds, helping them understand the concepts of eco-friendliness and environmental protection, and inspiring a spirit of holistic coexistence.
The Sanhao Children's Class has opened two classes this semester, with courses divided by age for preschoolers and children. A new children's martial arts class has been added to help children exercise and have a more diverse learning experience. Parent Chikako said that while her two children are enrolled in the Sanhao Children's Class, she can also attend an adult English Buddhist class. When the children's martial arts class is in session, she volunteers at the temple, giving the whole family the opportunity to learn about Buddhism.
