Hsi Fang Temple Chinese New Year Lego Art Exhibition Shows the full flavor of the New Year [Hurenshe Qiu Xiuli and Ye Yiting Report from San Diego] 2022-02-09

During the Chinese New Year, there is an endless stream of people who come to the Hsi Fang Temple of Fo Guang Shan to worship Buddha and walk in the spring. What is amazing is that in the center of the Buddhist hall, you will find a very special art exhibition, which displays Eugene Chiang’s LEGO art creations.

Eugene Chiang has been engaged in the art of miniature bricks for many years in his spare time. One of his first works is the Hsi Fang Temple, which is 70 cm long and 40 cm high. In this New Year’s special exhibition, he and his wife Christina will be moved by participating in temple activities for many years, and show them in the art works of Lego bricks. The visitors are all amazed and amazed.

Eugene Chiang was born in Taiwan and immigrated to the United States when he was a child. He and his wife have been close to the Hsi Fang Temple for many years, and they have always enjoyed it, full of Dharma joy. 4 years ago, I started to be keen on creating building blocks. Based on my love for my hometown and Chinese culture, I wanted to use Lego and Lego-like building blocks to present Taiwan and Chinese culture and let the American people know about it. Having observed that many Westerners want to learn more about Buddhism and Chinese culture, he found Lego bricks to be an excellent tool for learning and education.

Eugene Chiang believes that this exhibition is a perfect opportunity to introduce Chinese culture. There are seven sets of works on display, including “Hsi Lai Temple”, “Hsi Fang Temple”, “Dragon and Lion Dance”, “The Story of the Year”, “Chinese New Year”, ” Lantern Festival”, “Japanese Temple”. Using Lego blocks, he ingeniously created lively scenes of lively New Year beasts, dragon and lion dances, and a warm scene of a table full of delicious food and a reunion dinner.

In the guide description, he carefully pointed out the cultural characteristics of the “Nian”, such as: a complete fish, symbolizing prosperity and prosperity, dumplings representing gold ingots, sticking red paper and setting off firecrackers to scare away the beast of the Nian, etc. Through the exhibition of LEGO bricks, the traditional customs of Chinese culture are vividly conveyed to the American people.

On February 6, the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, Zhong Tanlin, a public visitor to the Hsi Fang Temple, praised the work “Hsi Fang Temple”, showing the details of the three-story building of the Hsi Fang Temple in great detail with Lego bricks. With LEGO bricks, the characteristics of Chinese culture are laid out, and the originality is unique, which is really novel.

Tian Yuzhi, who went to the Spring Festival, shared that he was pleasantly surprised to see such a special exhibition. He didn’t expect that watching the Lego blocks played by children at home could also express the lively atmosphere of the New Year so vividly, especially in the Hsi Fang Temple, where the lanterns were decorated with colorful decorations, making it lively and warm. Under the atmosphere, it makes people happy to watch. I am very grateful to the masters for their meticulous Spring Festival arrangements. I can also feel the strong flavor of my hometown in the United States.
